class="span class">Eva Longoria has hit a rough spot in her life. In addition to an impending divorce, she is currently dealing with Besos, her restaurant, going bankrupt. The restaurant served as a steakhouse and a nightclub. Despite earning substantial revenue, the company was experiencing a monthly loss.

E! Online reports :

Beso, a Sin City hotspot partly owned by the Desperate Housewives star, has filed for bankruptcy in order to restructure the upwards of $5.7 million in debt that’s piled up since its grand opening a mere two years ago.…

Longoria’s business, Beso LLC, is seeking Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for assets

totaling $2.5 million after the City Center-based restaurant and its adjoining nightclub, Eve, had trouble keeping up with the lease.

Despite grossing $14.6 million over the past year, court records show Beso racked up some $76,000 a month in losses and owes $1.8 million to landlords Crystals. Not to mention that Longoria’s company owes a bunch of contractors for construction work and some former partners who helped finance the building. A number of those investors have subsequently sued Beso LLC to get their money back.

According to the filing, the 35-year-old thesp owns a 32 percent stake in the business, but is also a creditor, having given Beso a $1 million loan.

Reps for Longoria and the restaurant have declined comment.

Eva was wise to diversify her income with something else. However, her goals might have been too lofty for a first-time restaurant and nightclub business. The restaurant business is difficult. It gets more difficult when you decidedly operate in Las Vegas and build a sizable structure in a field you know little about. The bigger the business, the more due diligence one should perform.

Since the business has been in operation for two years. There should have been professionals on board to help reduce costs and shift focus once the first year’s financials were analyzed. However, it’s important to note that many restaurants experience losses for the first couple of years. So, cash reserves are also very important to keep businesses like these afloat.

Nonetheless, we applaud Eva Longoria for her attempt at entrepreneurship. We hope this doesn’t lead to her giving up, but taking her lessons and trying again.

It’s important to stay in tune with the needs of your customers. Otherwise, you may end up with a situation like Essence Magazine. Apparently, the magazine targeted towards African American women has gotten so out of touch with its consumers that they’re canceling their subscriptions at record levels. So what has happened? There’s a post on the Essence website (page link no longer working) from an employee that gives the details:

Dear sisters,

Low level Essence staff members and interns are being forced to go on this website and post supportive comments about this issue and Essence Inc. in general. Since this issue came out Essence has been getting hundreds of calls from irate subscribers. There have been more canceled subscriptions in the last week or so than in last quarter put together. Senior management believes if they can have it look as if support for the cover is evenly split than they can stop the bleeding so to speak. They believe changing the perception is critical.

At a meeting last week focus on damage control was paramount, it was determined that Essence would release a statement acknowledging the controversy, no apology, just an acknowledgment via the website. This decision was soon nixed by a very senior person who is offended by all the negative reaction the cover is receiving and will not “placate a bunch of angry black women who don’t know what century this is” (exact words)

What this senior person has agreed to, is to allow Angela, Jeannine or Michelle to do interviews with other black media outlets. Ms. Taylor has also been asked to participate in damage control due to the high regard long time subscribers have for her. I don’t know the status of Ms. Taylor’s decision.

Beyond the vile, racist words spoken by this particular senior person, many readers have been in agreement that the magazine no longer meets their needs. The quality sucks. It’s out of touch with its reader base, so now they are faced with the repercussions of their actions.

Money talks. We applaud the action of these unsatisfied customers. It’s great to hear of black women making a statement through the most effective method. It isn’t often, but African Americans can mobilize and rail against brands that don’t represent their interests. It’s happened before with the brands Tommy Hilfiger and Cristal. Now Essence seems to be heading down this path and alienating its loyal and targeted audience. They’ll have to learn the hard way: never bite the hand that feeds you.

We encourage our readers to “rage against the machine” when they aren’t being treated respectfully by businesses or services. Withdraw your patronization and let your story be heard. Feel free at any point to share your experiences with Minority Fortune. We’re more than happy to give you a voice.
<div

Furthermore, we go out of our way to support small businesses and local brands that provide value. However, can’t say that we’d ever give our business to Mo Money Taxes….EVER, in this lifetime or the next.

We’ve seen bizarre videos like this surface over the years from this company, and they’re consistently atrocious. Yet, they’re still in business. Go figure. They do a disservice to the minority and finance community alike. We wouldn’t let this company even do our virtual pet’s taxes if it was the last tax service on this planet! Above all, we want to give this company our biggest Grade F stamp of all.

What’s even sadder about this video is the fact that they attempted to put all this effort into their video advertising, yet they fail to bring up anything regarding their expertise or knowledge in accounting or tax filing. Instead, it’s just packed full of ignorance. We shudder to think about what type of clients continue giving this company their business.

<object
